“I’m not the best at anything I do. I’m not the best singer, I’m not the best performer, I’m not the best actor. All I know is that there is something about me people like.” — Cher, 1991

But people don’t just like Cher, they’re mad for her. I witnessed this phenomenon in Las Vegas at the Colosseum Theater in Caesar’s Palace last weekend. Cher’s show was, of course, sold out but Dennis and I bought our tickets months ago when we learned we’d be in Las Vegas for a Dennis Green Sports Marketing project.

At the entrance to the Colosseum Theater, there is a mini-museum of some the Cher’s most famous fashion ensembles from the Sonny and Cher Show, her various tours and the Academy Awards. All of them were designed by Bob Mackie, her go-to designer since the 1960’s when they met on the “Carol Burnet Show”. Mackie said that when he met Cher she reminded him of a fortune teller!

Bob Mackie, an American fashion designer, is sometimes referred to as “the sultan of sequins” or the “rajah of rhinestones”. Even though he possesses seven Emmy Awards for his designs and was nominated three times for Academy Awards, he is best known for dressing Cher in very outrageous yet glamorous outfits for all of her major events. He has said, “A woman who wears my clothes is not afraid to be noticed.” That is definitely Cher! Even at 62 she wears his designs with ease and can still rock a Bob Mackie costume like no one else. This glittery, grand show featured at least 17 costume changes which were all a feast for a fashionista’s eyes. The show begins dramatically with Cher descending from the ceiling of the theater over the audience on what she calls, “the deathmobile” wearing a sparkly nude body suit with metallic fringe in strategic areas and on the headdress. After the first song, she did an acerbically funny R-rated monologue poking fun of everything from J. Lo’s derriere to Teamsters with too much testosterone. What followed was an incredibly glamorous hour and a half show with excerpts from Sonny and Cher’s early days, their hit television show, Cher’s movies (she’s an Oscar winner for best actress) and music videos. The exuberant audience spent lots of time on their feet and left wonderfully satisfied yet wanting more.

When the call came from Caesar’s Palace regarding doing the show, Cher had to think long and hard about the opportunity. She had just concluded what was supposed to be her last tour, “Living Proof: The Farewell Tour” in 2005. However, so much had changed technologically in sound, lighting and special effects since that tour it made her very excited about being able to present “the best show I’ve ever done in my life”. So, the “beat goes on” for Cher, an amazing woman from humble beginnings in El Centro, California. She will spend the next three years performing at Caesars Palace, alternating with Elton John and Bette Midler.

While in Las Vegas, I had to research the newest and hottest shopping area — The Shoppes at the Palazzo. I had great fun perusing the Italian themed mall featuring Barney’s New York, Christian Louboutin, Michael Kors, Tory Burch and Diane Von Furstenburg just to name a few. The mall is centered on a naturally lit atrium with a gigantic water fall and lovely fountains. There is a strategically placed bar right in the middle of it all — very convenient for having a cappuccino or even a cocktail while spending time in the fabulous shops — or in my case to rest my feet after walking what seemed like miles in high heels. Of course, it was a good excuse to buy a new pair of shoes at Louboutin invitingly located right next to the bar.
