I have always been fascinated with the idea of New Year's resolutions. It is refreshing to know on January 1st, theoretically, we can start out with a clean slate full of hope and opportunity. According to Gary Ryan Blair, one of the top strategic thinkers in the world and the inspiration behind New Year's Resolution Week, the tradition of New Year's resolutions goes back to 153 BC. Janus, a mythical king of early Rome, was placed at the head of the calendar and with his two faces, Janus could look at past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness and also exchanged gifts right before the beginning of each year.
Here are the inspiring New Year's resolutions of some fashionable locals for 2008.
Amy Wax, Owner, Del Mar Kids and The Back Room: To exercise more and adjust my diet so I have more energy.
Andrene Dziubinski, Public Relations Director, The Rare Earth and TRE: In 2008, I would like to listen more and talk less. Also, I am going to attempt to not use the word “I” in conversation to the extent that sometimes happens. (Telling stories is my forte, however, the more I sit back and listen to others, the more knowledgeable and inspired I become.)
Barbara Harper, Boys and Girls Club Board Member and Past President: I would like to see Ann, my trainer, regularly, to walk everyday, and to have Hillary Forbes do my hair on a regular basis at the fabulous new Salon Maintain . Also, I need to clean out my closets and get organized and caught up at home.
Denise Foyle, Store Manager, Dr. Michael Foyle's Optometrics: To wake up and be thankful everyday. I also want to make sure to say something positive to someone on a daily basis.
Gina and Tony Gutowski, Owners, Beach Culture: We are resolved to be done with cammo-print in the New Year and welcome back color but will keep a close eye on the colored denim and continue to enjoy the local customers that we appreciate very much.
Jayme Rones, Owner, Senor Jayme e-Bay Store: To lose weight and keep up with my dogs.
Kirsten Hansen, Community Relations Director, Lululemon: My resolution is to be financially savvy while cultivating abundance and balance in my life.
Marci Cavanaugh, Event Chair, Country Friends Fashion Show: I would like to get back into the routine of working out, spending time with my family (lots of skiing/boarding this winter) and renovating our home that we've lived in for 17 years. Also, I still believe in giving back to the community and this year I'll be working on Agency Funding for Country Friends.
Michael Kaufman, Designer, Diego Di Lucca Shoes: I would like to get on a good schedule where I can exercise more, spend more quality time with my children and time alone with my lovely wife. I will also try to eat more organic foods and help other people in need of basic everyday supplies that we take for granted.
Reni , Owner and Designer, She She Industries: To surround myself with simple joys and to find creative inspiration in everything.
Tamara Renee, Founder, @Health: I plan to continue to provide hope to people struggling with sustaining healthy lifestyle habits by determining what is ideal for their bodies. I hope to do more television interviews, open satellite locations in Orange County, LA, and Mammoth Lake, expand my services to include “Wellness Coaching” and learn the most empowering and loving way to direct and manage my staff. I also want to improve my time management skills so I can spend more time with the ones I love and also to learn to love my shapely calves.
Sherry Sims, Regional Manager for Women's Accessories, Macy's: To make a difference by volunteering more of myself and my time for the help and benefit of others. I want to feel more useful and connected to people and projects that need assistance.
Sonia Gill, owner, Crimson Boutique: To stay true to my passion of filling my boutique with luxurious fabrics, expressive textures and unique home décor. I want to bring in additional beautiful products with history and stories so as to make shopping at Crimson a special experience. More personally, ask myself, “What would Buddha do?” more often and use the answer as a guide. Also, to not let the five pounds from three years ago turn into twenty!
This New Year, my resolution is to continue to balance my wonderful family with my exciting job and to get to bed earlier.
